The story of Mister Nata
José Cruz, born in Portugal, now living in Amsterdam with a passion for gastronomy and sharing the Portuguese heritage in the Netherlands. With our passion for Portuguese gastronomy and the lack of quality products in the Benelux, we saw the need to fill this gap. We decided to supply this market with high quality products directly from Portugal. Discover the perfect Pastel de Nata straight from the Portuguese sun! A puff pastry filled with custard made from cream, egg yolks, sugar, flour and lemon zest. Within this wide range of local products, we have the king of all Portuguese sweets, known as “Pastel de Nata”. This delicacy with its crispy dough and creamy filling has been spreading joy in Portugal for over 300 years. Everyone in the world has the right to get addicted to one of the 7 wonders of Portuguese gastronomy. With our knowledge and experience, we can offer you the pastel de Nata you deserve. Pastel de Nata Story
The recipe for this delicacy dates back over 300 years to Belém, west of Lisbon. Pastéis de nata were made by monks at the Jerónimos Monastery (now a UNESCO World Heritage Site). At the time, the nuns and monks used egg whites to starch their clothes, and the leftover egg yolks became a staple ingredient in desserts. The monks started selling pastéis de nata when money was needed to support the monastery. When the monastery eventually closed in 1834, the recipe was sold to the owners of the Fábrica de Pastéis de Belém, which opened in 1837 and remains the most popular place to buy them in Lisbon. The shop is just a three-minute walk from the Jerónimos Monastery, so it’s definitely worth a visit if you ever find yourself in Lisbon!
